How to Download Videos and GIFs from X (Twitter) Posts
To download a video or GIF from X (formerly Twitter), copy the post's link, paste it into VidGrabo's X page and choose a quality. The file saves to your phone or computer as an MP4. GIFs also arrive as MP4 files, because that's how X actually stores them; this guide explains why and what that means for you.
Everything works in your browser on Android, iPhone or a computer, with no app and no account. Below you'll find how to copy a post link in the app and on the website, device-specific steps, and fixes for posts that won't download.
Step by step: download from X with VidGrabo
- Find the post with the video or GIF in the X app or on the website.
- Copy the post link (details below).
- Open VidGrabo's X (Twitter) downloader.
- Paste the link and press the download button.
- Choose a quality, or MP3 if you only want the audio of a video.
- Save the file when your browser asks.
It's free, with no sign-up, and works with one post link at a time.
How to copy a post link on X
In the X app
Under the post, tap the Share icon (an arrow or upward box, depending on your phone), then tap Copy link. You can also open the post first and use the same Share icon. The link you get points to that specific post, which is exactly what VidGrabo needs.
On the website
Click the post's date or time to open it on its own page; the address bar then shows a link containing "/status/" followed by a long number. Copy that address. The Share icon under the post also offers Copy link.
Replies, quotes and reposts
If the video sits in a reply, open that reply and copy its own link. For a quoted post, open the original post that contains the video, rather than the post that quotes it. Reposts point back to the original, so copying the link from a repost usually leads to the right place, but opening the original first is the safest choice.

Why GIFs download as MP4
When someone posts a GIF on X, the platform converts it into a short, silent, looping MP4 video. MP4 files are far smaller than real GIF files at the same picture quality, and they play smoothly on phones. So the "GIF" you see in your timeline is actually a video file, and VidGrabo saves exactly that file.
What this means in practice:
- The file has the .mp4 extension and opens in any video player or gallery.
- It won't loop automatically in most players, though many let you turn on repeat.
- It has no sound, because GIFs never had any. The MP3 option is therefore not useful for GIFs.
- Many messaging apps and editors accept MP4 directly. If a tool insists on a real .gif file, you'll need a separate converter.
For a plain explanation of the formats, read video formats: MP4 and MP3 explained.
Downloading on Android
Copy the post link in the X app, open your browser, go to VidGrabo and paste it. Long-press the box if the Paste option doesn't show right away. The finished file goes to Downloads and normally appears in the Gallery too. If you can't find it, open the Files app or your browser's downloads list.
Downloading on iPhone
Copy the link in X, then open VidGrabo in Safari or another browser and paste it. Choose a quality and tap Download when asked. The file is saved in the Files app under Downloads. To add it to Photos, open it in Files, tap Share and choose Save Video.
Downloading on a computer
On Windows, Mac or Linux, open the post on the X website, copy the address from the address bar, and paste it into VidGrabo in another tab. The MP4 file goes to your browser's download folder, usually Downloads. A computer is convenient if you're collecting clips of your own posts for a portfolio or archive.
Common problems and fixes
- Protected accounts. Posts from accounts with protected posts are visible only to approved followers. They aren't public, so VidGrabo can't download them.
- Posts that need a login to view. Some content on X only shows after you sign in, for example posts marked as sensitive or age-restricted. VidGrabo works only with public content and doesn't sign in on your behalf.
- The post contains only images. Photos are not videos. Make sure the post actually has a video or GIF.
- A link to a profile or search page. VidGrabo needs the link of one post, the kind with "/status/" in it.
- The video is a link card, not an upload. If the post just links to a video hosted on another site, there's no X video in the post to save.
- The post was deleted. Deleted posts and suspended accounts make links stop working.
- The video is very long. VidGrabo has a maximum video length, so long uploads may not be processed.

Use what you download fairly
X is full of clips from news broadcasts, sports, films and other people's lives. Most of that content is owned by someone else. Download only videos you own or have permission to use, and don't re-upload other people's clips as your own. Sharing the original post link is usually the better way to pass something on. Our copyright page has more on this.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an X account to download a video?
No. As long as the post is public, you only need its link. VidGrabo never asks you to sign in.
Can I download a whole thread or all videos from an account?
No. VidGrabo saves one post link at a time. Profile and bulk downloads aren't supported.
Why does my downloaded GIF have no sound?
GIFs on X are silent by nature. They're stored as soundless MP4 videos, so the file has no audio track.
What if a post has more than one video?
Paste the post link and choose from the options VidGrabo shows. If the clip you want isn't listed, check whether it's actually in a reply or a quoted post with its own link.
Are my downloads kept on VidGrabo's servers?
Only briefly. Files are deleted automatically after a short time, and there's no download history.
Conclusion
Saving videos and GIFs from X is simple once you have the right link: open the post, copy its "/status/" address, paste it into VidGrabo and pick a quality. Remember that GIFs come out as silent MP4 videos and that protected or login-only posts can't be saved. When you're ready, head to the X (Twitter) downloader.
